N/R: Five arrested as RED MARIA team seizes drugs, cash and motorbikes in Tamale
Five people have been arrested in Tamale following a targeted operation by the Northern Regional Police Command to disrupt drug peddling, drug use and related criminal activities.
The operation was conducted by the Command’s Special Operations team, popularly known as RED MARIA, on September 21, 2026, at about 11:30am.
Acting on credible information, the team proceeded to the Tamale Aboabo scraps area, near the forest, where the five suspects were arrested.
The suspects have been identified as Ibrahim Issahaku, 39; Mohammed John, 28; Mohammed Nawas, 25; Mohammed Osman Awal, 41; and Kwame Boateng, 28.
During a search at Ibrahim Issahaku’s residence, police recovered two foreign-made pistols and two rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The team also found one parcel of suspected Indian hemp and GH¢1,880 in cash at the residence.
In a separate recovery, GH¢18,825 was found concealed inside the motorcycle of Kwame Boateng at the ghetto. Police suspect the money to be proceeds from the sale of narcotic drugs.
The Tamale operation also led to the recovery of 123 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 12 sachets of 1mg Rohypnol, seven sachets of 250mg Tramadol and 111 wraps of suspected ashes.
Three motorbikes were also seized during the operation.
The five suspects, together with the recovered exhibits, have been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (RDLEU) for further investigation and necessary action.
The Northern Regional Police Command said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, drug use and other related criminal activities in the region.
The Command said it would continue to sustain intelligence-led operations to identify and disrupt drug-related activities and associated crimes.
The Command also urged residents to support its efforts by providing credible information that could help identify and disrupt criminal activities within the metropolis. It encouraged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
