Ghana Police to enforce traffic laws from October 1
The Ghana Police Service will begin full implementation of its automated traffic law enforcement programme, TRAFFITECH-GH, from October 1, 2026.
The programme will be implemented through the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) as part of efforts to tackle indiscipline on Ghana’s roads.
The Police Service said the programme is also aimed at improving compliance with road traffic laws and regulations.
In its announcement, the Service said, “The programme forms part of efforts by the Service to address indiscipline on Ghana’s roads and improve compliance with road traffic laws and regulations.”
TRAFFITECH-GH will use cameras and Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices to detect traffic offences.
The Police Service explained that “TRAFFITECH-GH will use cameras and Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices to detect traffic offences and support the enforcement of road traffic regulations.”
Detected offences will be reviewed before an Electronic Notice of Violation (ENV) is issued.
The notice will be sent to the vehicle owner or driver through SMS.
According to the Service, “Under the programme, detected offences will be reviewed and Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) issued to vehicle owners or drivers through SMS.”
The notice will indicate the traffic offence committed and the prescribed fine.
The Police Service is therefore urging motorists, drivers and vehicle owners to comply with road traffic regulations.
It also called on the public to support the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH.
The Service said the programme is intended to promote safer roads and reduce road traffic crashes and casualties.
“The Service therefore urges all motorists, drivers and vehicle owners to comply with road traffic regulations and support the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH to promote safer roads and reduce road traffic crashes and casualties,” the statement said.
Full implementation of the automated traffic enforcement programme will begin on October 1, 2026.
