Mahama to cut sod for three 160-bed regional hospitals

President John Dramani Mahama will cut sod for three new 160-bed regional referral hospitals in the coming weeks.

The hospitals will be built in the Oti, Savannah and Western North Regions as part of government’s plan to improve healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialist services.

Felix Kwakye Owusu, spokesperson to the President, announced the projects.

“As part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare in Ghana, President Mahama will cut sod in the coming weeks for three 160-Bed Regional Referral Hospitals in the Oti, Savanah and Western North Regions,” he stated.

The three hospitals are expected to strengthen referral healthcare in the regions. They will provide additional capacity for patients who require services beyond what district and other lower-level health facilities can provide.

The government has already released the design for the Oti Regional Referral Hospital. The facility is expected to serve residents across the Oti Region and provide access to higher-level medical services.

The hospital could also reduce the need for residents to travel outside the region for specialist treatment.

Oti became a region in 2019 following Ghana’s regional reorganization. The planned hospital will add to the region’s public healthcare infrastructure. Savannah and Western North will also receive 160-bed regional referral hospitals under the plan.

Regional referral hospitals provide a link between district-level healthcare and specialist medical services. They receive referrals from lower-level facilities and offer more advanced diagnosis and treatment.

The new facilities could also create jobs in the three regions. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory staff and other health professionals will be needed when the hospitals become operational. Administrative, technical and support workers will also be required.

Government has not yet announced the total cost of the three projects. Details on the contractors, construction timelines and completion dates have also not been provided.

The government has not yet released details on the specific medical services that will be available at each hospital. Further information is expected as preparations for the sod-cutting ceremonies continue.

For the Oti Region, the release of the hospital design provides an early look at one of the major healthcare facilities planned under the initiative.

The three projects are part of government’s broader efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve access to specialist care.

Once completed and operational, the hospitals are expected to strengthen referral services and bring higher-level healthcare closer to residents in Oti, Savannah and Western North.
