Mahama unveils US$2bn annual investment plan to drive job creation

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to mobilise about US$2 billion in investment each year for nine strategic sectors as government shifts its focus to job creation.
The President said the investment would target sectors with the potential to create jobs on a large scale. He said the private sector would play the leading role in driving the investment.
Mahama made the announcement during an engagement with traditional leaders from the Ahafo Region on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The President said government’s initial focus was on restoring economic stability through fiscal reforms.
He said the next stage would focus on creating jobs and opportunities, particularly for young people.
“I’m happy to announce that it yielded results, and today the Ghanaian economy is more solid and stronger than it was in the past,” he said.
Mahama then announced the planned annual investment target for the nine strategic sectors. “We want to make about $2 billion available every year in key sectors that can create jobs, but it will be driven mostly by the private sector,” he explained.
Agriculture will be a major part of the strategy. The President identified oil palm and poultry as two areas with strong potential to increase local production.
He said expanding these sectors could also help Ghana reduce its dependence on imports.
Mahama called on traditional authorities to support the agriculture drive by making land available for commercial farming. He also encouraged traditional leaders to take part in investment ventures in their communities. Another part of the job creation plan is the proposed establishment of 24-hour markets across the country.
The government plans to establish the markets in all 261 districts.
According to the President, the markets will provide farmers with ready markets for their produce.
They are also expected to support economic activity in communities and create additional employment opportunities. The job creation strategy is expected to feature in the government’s 2027 budget.
For the Ahafo Region, Mahama also reaffirmed government’s commitment to key infrastructure projects. These include road projects, a tertiary institution and a regional hospital.
The President’s announcement comes as government moves from its focus on economic stabilisation to a broader agenda centred on investment, job creation and economic opportunities.
The proposed US$2 billion annual investment target will focus on nine strategic sectors, with the private sector expected to play a major role in driving investment and creating jobs.
