Ato Forson overtakes Asiedu Nketiah in NDC 2028 Flagbearer race

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has taken the lead in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2028 presidential race among party delegates, according to a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics.

The poll, conducted between September 11 and 13, 2026, puts Dr Forson at 32%, up from 22% in the July 2026 poll.

NDC National Chairman General Asiedu Nketiah, who previously led the race, has dropped to 23%, from 27% in July.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu follows with 5%, down from 6%, while former Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang records 3%, down from 7%.

Julius Debrah attracts 4%, compared with 5% in the previous poll. Professor Joshua Alabi has moved from 1% to 2%, while Eric Opoku remains on 1%.

The number of undecided delegates has also fallen from 30% to 28%.

The poll marks the first time Dr. Forson has overtaken General Asiedu Nketiah in the delegate survey.

Dr Forson recorded gains across several regions. He leads in the Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Western and Western North regions.

He has also taken the lead in the Bono Region for the first time.

The poll shows General Asiedu Nketiah leading in Ahafo, Bono East, Northeast, Savannah, Oti, Upper East, Upper West and Volta regions.

Haruna Iddrisu leads in the Northern Region.

According to Global InfoAnalytics, Dr. Forson made significant gains in the swing regions compared with the July poll. He gained seven percentage points in those regions and 16 percentage points in Akan-dominated regions.

General Asiedu Nketiah, meanwhile, gained 10 percentage points in the Volta/Oti bloc, while Haruna Iddrisu gained three percentage points in the northern bloc.

The Finance Minister also leads General Asiedu Nketiah in a head-to-head contest.

Dr Forson records 41%, up from 33% in July, while the NDC chairman has dropped from 34% to 30%.

Undecided delegates in the head-to-head contest have fallen from 33% to 29%.

However, General Asiedu Nketiah maintains a significant lead over Haruna Iddrisu in a separate head-to-head contest.

He records 41% against Mr. Iddrisu’s 11%, while 48% remain undecided.

The poll also examined whether delegates prefer the NDC to elect an economist as its presidential candidate.

Among delegates who support that idea, 55% prefer Dr Forson, 22% favor General Asiedu Nketiah and 23% are undecided.

Among those who disagree with the idea, 65% prefer General Asiedu Nketiah, while 16% favor Dr Forson and 19% are undecided.

The survey further found that 56% of delegates agree that the NDC should elect an economist to face former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also an economist.

Twenty per cent disagree, while 24% have no opinion.

In the July poll, 58% supported the idea, 23% disagreed and 19% had no opinion.

The latest survey sampled 3,615 NDC delegates from the 7,600 delegates surveyed in July.

Global InfoAnalytics said it used random-probability telephone sampling, with a completed-response rate of 93%.
