WASSCE 2026: Mathematics rebounds to 60.75% in WASSCE 2026 after 2025 dip
Core Mathematics performance has rebounded in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with 60.75 percent of candidates obtaining grades A1 to C6.
The figure was contained in provisional performance statistics released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Friday.
The data were provided in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, covering candidates’ performance in the four core subjects.
According to the statistics, 306,234 candidates, representing 60.75 percent, obtained grades between A1 and C6 in Core Mathematics.
The latest performance marks a significant recovery from the sharp decline recorded in 2025, when only 48.73 percent of candidates obtained grades A1 to C6.
The 2026 figure represents an increase of 12.02 percentage points compared with the previous year.
Despite the improvement, Mathematics performance remains below the levels recorded in 2023 and 2024.
In 2023, 62.23 percent of candidates obtained A1 to C6 in Mathematics, while the proportion increased to 66.86 percent in 2024.
The latest figures therefore show that although Mathematics has recovered from its 2025 plunge, performance has not yet returned to the levels recorded before the decline.
The results also show that 54,420 candidates obtained D7 in Mathematics, representing 10.80 percent.
Another 54,121 candidates, or 10.74 percent, obtained E8, while 74,692 candidates, representing 14.82 percent, received F9.
Mathematics was not the only core subject to record an improvement in 2026.
Integrated Science also recorded a rise in the proportion of candidates obtaining A1 to C6, increasing from 57.74 percent in 2025 to 62.08 percent in 2026.
Social Studies recorded the strongest performance among the four core subjects, with 78.04 percent obtaining A1 to C6.
English Language, meanwhile, continued its downward trend, falling to 62.40 percent, its lowest performance across the four-year period.
A total of 512,862 candidates wrote the 2026 WASSCE, according to WAEC’s statistics.
